Antique Dogon multi-arms lamps ornated with decorations. These functional iron lamps, with bowls to burn oil, and 2 staffs, express status, prestige and power. lamps were used during ceremonies in a community or individual sanctuary or used as an incense Burner. Oil known as tulu, made from the Karite tree nut was burned in the cup to produce a dark, smoky light that was as much a light for ritual purposes as for illumination. They would bring honor to the ancestors, the current leadership and the owner of the sculpture. They usually depicted a former leader, seated, standing or on horseback. Although rare, horsemen as icon have existed for 1000 years in Mali. Some would depict a hogon, the supreme officeholder, a semi-divine leader of great wisdom, or even a mythological emissary from a distant land.

This type of circular pendant representing a sun refers to an ancient and complex passage of the Dogon cosmogony, at a time when light was given to men through 10 suns. A very fine and early miniature divination piece depicting a male figure in a seated position as a thinker. This small, unique male bronze figure was used for measuring gold and was made using a technique called lost wax casting (in French cire perdue). Lost wax casting is the process by which a metal sculpture is cast from a wax sculpture. A significant proportion of human figure weights is devoted to representing ritual practices including preparing offerings and sacrifices as well as oath-taking, hunting and other everyday activities.

This iron forged neckrest originates from the Dogon Tellem people in Mali. Headrests such as this were used as burial gifts or quite possibly the headrests used by the deceased was buried with the deceased as it is done in some other parts of Africa. The Dogon, who do not now use headrests, attribute them to the Tellem, former inhabitants of the region from the 11th to the 16th centuries. Buria caves contained many objects that were offered as gifts for the dead : bowls, potteries, necklaces, bracelets, rings, and iron staffs. Headrests may have been objects of high status, because only a few caves contained them.
