The spoons range in size from a foot to two feet and have one or (rarely) two parallel bowls. The handle of the spoon is always decorated and often is related to the human form and often feature a pair of legs like this example.Among the Dan, the owner of the spoon is called wa ke de, "at feasts acting woman." It is a title of great distinction that is given to the most hospitable woman of the village. With the honor, however, comes responsibility - the wa ke de must prepare the large feast that accompanies masquerade ceremonies.

A stunning Dogon door beautifully decorated with ancestral geometric figures. The lock consists of an abstract style head on top and rows of zig zags underneath representing the “flowing of water” in Dogon terminology, this continues to the door as a lighter carving and then further down in the form of a fish which the Dogon relate to the “Nommo”.The granary door lock (called ta koguru) is carved with a couple of nommo figures. These symbolize a strong magic and spiritual force. This force is then, according to beliefs’ animists of Dogon, imparted to the door lock. In the Dogon myth of the creation of the Earth, the amma god bore a being figure known as nommo (the nommo anagonno, symbolized by a fish). This nommo gave birth to four couples of nommo, considered as the eight ancestors of the mankind (unum) and the four elements.

They are used in strip-weaving to produce long, narrow strips of cloth that would be sewn together later to create a large textile. The Nommo figure are seen as spirits that are supposed to protect the weaver and help him produce good quality of textiles. The piece featured here is a deeply carved wood spear head in a bamboo shaft from the Dogon tribe in Mali. The spear head is carved of heavy dense wood and shows bars or barbs down one side. The head would remove from the shaft. The most notable weapons were made using a long wooden sheath and a metallic head as well as the bow and arrows and shields often made from animal hide. Spears were leaf shaped with along wooden shaft.The weapons consisted of spears and special javelins.Sometimes these were attached to a long string so that, after spearing an enemy, the spear could be pulled back again and used once more.

Using the bells and rattle stuffs to call the ancestor’s spirit, the oba offered sacrifices to him and to the earth on the altar.

This Chokwe shield is carved from wood, with raised head and striated surface, very similar in form to Songye Shields and Luba Shields. They are interesting because, on the outside of the shield, the Chokwe depicted copies of their masks, symbolizing the connection with the spirits of their ancestors. In connection with their living conditions, the rounded shields are built for movement and hunting since the Northern people are hunters. The shield is completely carved out of wood.

The Ntomo (also called N'domo) Bamana mask originate from Mali. They were worn by boys as they passed through the early cycle of initiation into manhood. As part of the six initiation societies collectively known as Dyow, the main aim of the initial 5-year long N'tomo Dyo is to prepare uncircumcised boys for adulthood and to educate them about life including farming skills and discipline. The masqueraders wearing the masks, enter the village compound to announce the start of a ritual or a puppet masquerade. There are two main style groups of their masks. One is characterized by an oval face with four to ten horns in a row on top like a comb, often covered with cowries or dried red berries. The other type has a ridged nose, a protruding mouth, a superstructure of vertical horns, in the middle of which or in front of which is a standing figure or an animal. The ntomo masks with thin mouths underscore the virtue of silence and the importance of controlling one’s speech. During their time in ntomo the boys learn to accept discipline. They do not yet have access to the secret knowledge related to korè and other initiation societies. Members wore a wooden face mask during the initiation festival at harvest time and when begging for rice.
